Fallout Shelter in 2021 - Still Alive

 

It's been 6 years since Fallout Shelter first debuted as a surprise companion game to Fallout 4, released in Fall 2015. The game has had a ton of content added to it in the initial launch. But where does it stand today?

It achieved a number of milestones, including the most downloaded game of 2015 and the highest-grossing mobile game app for the subsequent years - which is no easy task, since the game is free but makes money through paid cosmetic upgrades and lootcrates.

At the time the game was ground-breaking, and it still is - it spawned numerous clones, but never lived up to the appeal of Fallout. In 2018, HBO released a West World mobile game that borrowed much of the gameplay but within the story and setting of Michael Crichton's famed tv movie that was adapted into an  Emmy winning HBO show.

Unfortunately, the developers behind the game (which had helped Bethesda build Fallout Shelter) was sued for recycling code from Fallout Shelter and the game was shut down.

That brings us to 2021, where the game still is functional and since there's no ending to the game, is still playable with increasing challenges. However, the lack of new content has made the game a bit old to players - but if you're just joining, there's still tons to do with months, if not years, of activities and content to play.

The lootcrates and epic costumes are still being sold, but thankful they're still optional (although the cheat codes/trainer make it possible to get whatever gear or weapons you want).
